Dental bridges quite literally bridge the gap in your smile. When a single tooth or multiple adjacent teeth are missing, we can use a dental bridge to restore them. Bridges are an aesthetic replacement for your missing teeth and they also improve the function of your bite.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are a few different types of bridges available, but they all rely upon one or more supports (abutments) to hold in place one or more prosthetic teeth (pontics). We offer our patients the following options for bridges:

Traditional Dental Bridge – As you might expect, the traditional bridge is the most common type of bridge. It involves placing crowns on the two healthy teeth on either side of your missing tooth (or teeth); these crowns then hold a bridge of pontics to restore your smile and bite.

Cantilever Bridge – Cantilever bridges are similar to traditional bridges except that instead of requiring two crowns for support, this type of bridge only needs one adjacent tooth to serve as an abutment. Because cantilever bridges place a great deal of stress on the supporting tooth, we typically only use them when no other options are available.

Implant-Supported Bridge – Implant-supported bridges are an increasingly popular option because they don’t require the support of other teeth. Instead, pontics are supported by dental implants that replace the two outermost missing teeth.

Maryland Bridge – Maryland bridges bond a metal or ceramic support structure to the abutment teeth. While this doesn’t compromise healthy teeth to the degree that traditional bridges do, it’s also not as strong.

If you’re not certain which type of bridge is right for your needs, your doctor will discuss all of the options with you during your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Bridges

Is a bridge better than an implant?

Every patient is different, but generally speaking, dental implants are preferred to bridges because they prevent bone loss in the jaw.

Can you get a bridge for just one tooth?

Yes, bridges can be used to replace just one tooth. The exception to this is implant-supported bridges; if you only need to replace one tooth, you would get a single tooth dental implant, not  a bridge.

Does a dental bridge look natural?

Dental bridges look natural when they’re designed by a skilled dentist who takes the time to create a restoration that matches your existing teeth. Our team is specially trained in providing realistic bridges.

What can you not eat with a dental bridge?

You can eat most foods with a dental bridge, but we recommend not biting down on raw vegetables, hard candy, ice, and other hard foods with your bridge.

What is the alternative to a bridge?

The alternatives to a bridge are dental implants or, in some cases, a partial denture. Of course, another option is to not replace your tooth at all, but this can seriously compromise your oral health.
